If you have recently contacted the Premier's office, you will have received, or will soon receive, a misleading form letter from one of her advisors which would let you believe everything is hunky-dory at the Regent. It claims, erroneously, that the Showcase cinema and bar area have no heritage significance, and that the Regent will continue to screen films. Yes, but only on weekends and public holidays in just one 300-seat cinema and maybe two tiny auditoria - and for how long this wll last and what kind of films will be screened, nobody will say. Please don't settle for this non-answer.

Same old story
I received the form letter you mentioned late last week (the second time) and found it not only offensive but an alarming indication the Premier's office appears to have its head buried firmly in the sand. In my most recent communication I once again referred to the current abundant supply of empty office space in the CBD (some right next door to the Regent) and Valley (backed up by recent reports in the C-M and Fin Review) thus invalidating the assertion that another office tower is desperately needed and I also made mention of the obvious benefits stemming from restoring the Regent to its former status - giving us at least one venue (which may last another 80 years) comparable to those found in Melbourne providing Brisbane with the means to attract long-running (and therefore lucrative) stage shows instead of all the money flowing south. Would an office tower be something of which all of us could be proud, bring guests to and be of value to future generations? I think not. A fully restored Regent would. I totally concur with the sentiments in Cynthia Webb's well-written piece.
