Support is growing for a change of heart on the Regent, with many Queenslanders calling on the Premier, Anna Bligh, to encourage the site's owners and developers to include a restored large theatre in their plans. Meanwhile, in an ad in the brochure for the Queer Film Festival, the Brisbane International Film Festival is using a picture of the Regent's Showcase Theatre to promote itself. BIFF won't be on until November and, sadly, the Showcase will close in June and, unless we all fight very hard, will be demolished not long afterwards. A world-class film festival needs a venue like the Showcase (or a super-sized, restored version thereof), and the wonderful red-carpet experience that can only be had in Brisbane at the Regent! If you haven't already done so, please email the Premier and the owners of the building. The details are under the Links menu item.

Save the Regent
I have written to them all - they need to know that whether or not the façade is kept, if they allow this old cinema to be gutted they will be destroying it. I feel very strongly about this and I am disgusted that this is being allowed.

What can we do?
Is writing to Anna Bligh the best course of action at this point?
I want to contribute, but I'm not sure how.
Letters are the answer
Yes, please do write to Anna Bligh. Make it clear that her solution to "save" the Regent is not good enough by throwing three small (two of them tiny) "theatres" (from the plans we have seen, they don't have proper projection facilities) into the tower. Letters to the editor -- especially the Courier-Mail (cmletters@anp.newsltd.com.au) -- and comments on online news stories are also effective ways to get the message across. Thanks for your support. I, too, deplore the potential loss of this theatre. Why is it that we do not lean from past mistakes? My blog,Your Brisbane: Past and Present has a post dedicated to the Regent:

Regent theatre
i have returned to Brisbane after many years over seas, and i was struck by the many beautiful buildings that still grace the river and the inner city. One of those graceful buildings I remember was the Regent, such elegance from another time and right in the middle of my city......how good that made me feel, and then to hear then to hear that there are plans to ripe it up for yet another steril modern building..........shame on you Anna Bligh, shame on you and this will be a stain you will not be able to wash away.....shame on you and shame on us for letting it happen.
Overseas too often the rush to ripe the heart out of an old area to rush up high offices and expensive apartments, tears the very heart from the city, transforming it from a unique and personal area to an empty hole, deserted by the people when they are not at work and a city with out a heart is an empty city and a vacuum to less attractive elements.
Brisbane has the grace and charm of old Brisbane and the vibrancy of a modern and attractive city, which is enjoyed by all ages, as a city heart should be.......don't take yet another unique part of Brisbane for a quick profit....
