In this Brisbane Times story savetheregent.com webmaster Brett Debritz urges Brisbane people to visit the Regent before its scheduled closure in June - and to keep up the fight to save the iconic venue.
What a glorious place the Regent is....and Brisbane seems ready to throw away this original building....what a waste, and the young people too morne the passing of the 'original' Brisbane be it 'old queenslander' home or such hidden treasures as the Regent....it is up to us to preserve this stucture, some parts of which will be classified as 'heretage ' areas in a short 10 years........shame on the Anna Bligh and shame on the city council, and shame on us for allowing big dollars to run away with the heritage of Brisbane......
The Regent is one of only a few places in Brisbane that has the atmosphere of old. I am sick and tired of new office buildings that are ugly and have no character. Ultimately Brisbane will no longer have beauty and character about it. Brisbane and its council is closing a piece of history that cannot be replaced!!! Why take away something that has help characterise and shape the Queen st Mall. If we continue to demolish the world will become a sadder and extremely modern society where relics are of the past..... This is a very sad discovery. I am beginning to hate the city that I once loved.....
I have just returned from a trip south where I enjoyed "Wicked" at the restored Capitol Theatre in Sydney, and further South I enjoyed "Cats" at the restored Regent Melbourne. While in Melbourne I visited the Princess and His Majesty's Theatres. While down there we also travelled to Tasmania and visited the Restored Theatre Royal in Hobart.
These are tourist dollars Brisbane will NEVER see because there is nothing left!
I agree with your comments entirely. Being an ex Tasmanian having only lived in Brisbane for six years now, I really miss the historical buildings which are a drawcard to the state I once called home. After a trip to Sydney I was amazed by the beautiful architecture and history of the city. I was constantly taking photos. If the Regent cinema is ruined then what can Brisbane enjoy and escape to after a stressfull long day at work, which I like to do sometimes. People like something different and unique. Not modern office buildings they are ugly and dont give any character or beauty to the city and turns me off from living here.
Keep up the fight I know with public pressure we can help stop the demolition and preserve this beautiful building.
Im from the USA, and I have seen in the past 30 years there a multitude of historical landmarks, very SOLID STRUCTURES, being replaced by quick fixes from contractors, with DRAB, HIGH RISE BUILDINGS THAT BLOCK THE SUN, DESTROY VEGITATION AND HISTORICAL VISUAL BUILDINGS,BREATH TAKING ARCHITECT,to be replaced by box type tal plain jane depressing unhealthy for the imagination, inviroments, why cant these newfound architects take NOTICE TO THE BEAUTIFUL FORMS THAT WILL BE LOST FOREVER IN STORY BOOKS LIKE A MYTH OF OUR PAST THOUSANDS OF YEARS OR SO, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH PROGRESS AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT HIDE THE INTELLIGENCE OF PAST SUCCESSES THAT LASTED CENTURIES............ OR IS IT TODAYS CORPERATE WORLD DOES NOT WANT TO SHOW THIER STUPIDITY OR LACK OF IMAGINATION FOR TRUE ART.just like the indiginous cultures rip it away forget about it its the past make way for inovation.....LMAO......if thats what they call it , i myself can only see lack of apreciation for a beautiful thing in life because todays architectural culture can not come close to matching the imaginative building structures or the time spent doing it...........where is the pride in our inviroment people???? it is not in box type buildings with plain white interior!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no wonder the world is depressed look what progression too fast without using the mind has done, build faulty buildings, eyesores, slack maintenace, oh, sorry I FORGOT.........LMAO.....ITS ART, astraight line is the first thing i learnt about art, and geometric shapes, has anyone in todays world graduated to the point of actually using the imagination with this?

another beautiful building hits the dust. Being from Germany I often get told I would love to visit Europe you have so many old beautiful buildings....it's so interesting. Well....stop knocking down the buildings that are worth saving and give them a chance to get old. I moved '88 to Brisbane and loved this particular building so much....I hardly went to any other cinema for that reason. And what great BIFF parties we have enjoyed there..... Now living in Sydney I just found out through FB about this horrendous plan.
