Film festival launched

The Regent's tenants, Birch, Carroll and Coyle, are sponsoring a film festival and competition before they move out in June. A percentage of proceeds from ticket sales will go to the contest prize pools. Enjoy the Regent while you can - and keep up the fight to save the Showcase Cinema and the magical bar area from demolition! Details of the festival and contest are here. Click here to email the Premier and other state and council officials, and the building's owner, to let them know that you do not agree with the current plans to demolish the Showcase cinema and ornate bar area, and are concerned that the demoliton and construction process may impact adversely on the Regent's foyer. Here's a clever promo for the festival starring Drew Jarvis (aka Curio from The Shak) . It was shot in the Showcase cinema, which, I hope you agree, really must be saved:

Save the Regent

The Regent is one of the venues that is a must to visit each time we come to Brisbane. I thought it was a city icon, to be forever enjoyed. I really couldn't believe it when I read that it is going to be demolished. Even sadder to my mind was that there was nothing in the foyer to alert visitors to the fact that it is soon to be destroyed. Nobody collecting signatures - I'm sure thousands of tourists would have signed. I suppose the developers have forbidden that.

I do so hope that the protest is a success and really wish I could be in Brisbane to join in. It's great to realise that the people of Brisbane value their heritage even if their government doesn't. It's a pity that we can't elect governments that listen to the people who elect them. The policy of greed and bowing to the wishes of developers is short sighted Doesn't the state government realise that the Regent is a tourist draw card? It's certainly one of the main reasons, together with the Brisbane Arcade, to visit the Mall. Buildings and places of historical interest and beautiful scenics = tourists, high rise buildings and endless shopping centres has them on the run - they have all of that at home.

Shame on Anna Bligh and her government for allowing this to happen. We all know how easy it would be for her to insist the Regent become an integral part of the new complex. Also strange as it might seem to the developers, their new complex would also benefit in many ways if the Regent were its centre piece as there would be many more visitors and so the rents could be set accordingly.
