This cannot happen....I can't believe another piece of Brisbane's history is going to be destroyed. I thought we got over the "knock it down" era of the Dean Brothers...apparently not!! Why does everything in this city of any historical importance have to be replaced with some revoltingly ugly brand spanking new multi-coloured building?? Have all the powers that be lost their minds?
Even if you have already done so, please email our political leaders, the developers and the owners to let them know how you feel, and tell them there is another way.
The people of Brisbane have and ARE being scammed by the Premier, Mayor and the opposition. We must not allow this demolition to proceed. We need to chain ourselves to the building if necessary.

Best wishes for your Save the Regent cause - I have just been fortunate enough to enjoy the atmosphere of the refurbished Regent in Melbourne - what a delight it was to attend a show there. I can only hope that you have the same success with saving this magnificent historical building in Brisbane.
The glorious Melbourne Regent is the only totally intact Regent in Australia from the 1920s. The 1929 Brisbane Regent cinema auditorium was demolished in 1978-9. The original 1929 entrance lobby, grand foyer and staircase remain and will be preserved in the new development. Those who pine for the 1979 Showcase should go to Melbourne to see what their original 1929 Regent was like.
This is typical Qld. This (and the previous) government has no idea of the value of these beautiful treasures. They need an education on the importance of historical buildings and design. All they care about is tearing down our history and building yet more ugly concrete boxes. They are in bed with developers.
To Whom It May Concern... Re: Saving the Regent
It may be the final curtain call for 'The Brisbane Regent' as we know it...
And they say all good things come to an end. But we need to give 'The Regent' a standing ovation and find out another way to bring this magnificent building back to it's Prime.
Melbourne did it with their Regent, they even did it for Route 66 in the children's movie 'Cars'.
There are so many opportunities for this gorgeous building in the heart of Bris-Vegas.
From a Grand Hotel or Theatre for the likes of 'Phantom of the Opera' to School Formals the list is endless.
After all, Heritage of Europe is what we all travel across the world to see.
Now we have a responsibility to our own heritage.
The children learn of the importance of our Heritage and Australian Pride at school.
I know progress happens but why not progress with style.
The most beautiful buildings around the world have all the Gold and Glamour.

It is astounding that the decision to destroy (vandalise) the Regent has been upheld. Melbourne's Regent is an absolute treasure, which will remain for generations to enjoy. What a shame, an absolute discrace, that the short term financial interests of a few are allowed to outweigh the benefits and cultural heritage of many.
I feel vey very sad that we keep making the same mistakes regarding unique, culturally relevant architecture.

Or they could look at the Showcase, which is a scaled-down version of the Brisbane Regent auditorium incorporating original material, yet will be demolished under the developer's plans. How about we knock down the Colisseum in Rome because there are other, more intact amphitheatres.
I live in Perth and have just seen the news about THE REGENT in Brisbane. There is not a lot of history in Australia and yet there are people who want too destrsy it. Like Sydney there will be regrets in the years to come.
Please save The Regent. I am from Melbourne, The Regent Melbourne was saved and is a cultural icon of our city. Brings many tourists to our city.
I visited Brisbane a number of years and visited The Regent and was spell bound by it's beauty.
Any architectural idiot can build another dull skyscraper, they can not build a building as beautiful as The Regent.
Does Brisbane have any other beautiful buildings that should be heritage listed? Why The Regent isn't listed is beyond me.

We in Ballarat appreciate our Regent Theatre and its history, it is the heart of our heritage and is continually booked out for wonderful entertainment including ballet, opera, musicals and our Royal South Street competitions. Once your theatre is gone so is your culture. Try to think of the many ways you could increase the entertainment and many people will come. GOOD LUCK to all of you who believe in keeping our heritage.

The government is all too quick to heritage list a tree or a dilapidated weatherboard cottage, but when it comes to preserving a beautiful building like the Regent, where are they? The silence is deafening because the bottom line is the almighty dollar!
They pulled down the Regent theatre in Sydney and they have regretted it since. Don't let this happen to "our" Regent.

I am from Melbourne and only heard of the proposed destruction of the Regent Theatre in Brisbane this morning. I am appalled that such a beautiful building is to be torn down to make way for yet another ugly and unnecessary office building. For the Queensland government to sanction this destruction makes me very angry. Melbourne went through this very same scenario many years ago, but, fortunately for Melbourne our Regent Theatre was restored and is now used all the time for the big shows, why can't the Regent in Brisbane be restored and used for shows? This would serve two purposes, firstly it would save a beautiful and loved building and secondly it would be profitable. Saving the Regent is essential and I would implore the Queensland Government to stop this travesty and give Brisbane back the Regent. Good luck with your fight, I sincerely hope that you win against the developer who is only interested in their profits.
I was on the footpath outside this absolutely magnificent theatre 28 years ago, cooking bacon and eggs to "save the regent"!
I would be there now, strapped to the front of this cultural icon, 24/7, however I now live in Melbourne & France.
Why is this not a heritage-listed building?
They ripped down Cloudland at 3am Sunday morning!
BEWARE! these savages, who have no regard for history, are sneaky.
I pray this will stand for many generations to see the beautiful workmanship and grace that once stood proud . . . instead of greed.
It's so typical of this country to destroy it's heritage, I live in a town (Cootamundra NSW)where they pulled down the most beautiful art deco theatre to make way for an RSL club, for real. Then they went on the pull down a gorgeous Town Hall, the rebuild is an eye sore. We should do all we can to stop this carnage and have these buildings listed.
I was there with everyone standing up for the Regent. Well done to the organisers who gave a great speech reinforcing some of the arguments including highlighting Anna Bligh's blatant lies and change of mind on the matter.
It is beyond belief how ridiculous this is that they don't want to save this theatre...
They had some of the footage on Channel 9 morning news today and they even took inspiration with their story wording from some of the speech from the 'protest'/queue. I think that Save the Regent group was heard.
I can only hope the government see some sense... we are nearly at the point of no return which is simply disgusting that they would let this happen.

You might understand if it was to make way for something that is really needed in the city like a new hospital or school! But another office block, i don't understand. I hope that the people involved have thought long and hard about this decision, because once it is gone it is gone. There is no way you could rebuild something so beautiful again. Think of all the hard work that went into the regent all those years ago when they didn't have the technology and equipment we have today. Hense the saying THEY DON'T BUILD THEM LIKE THEY USED TO. If the building is not making an income that it is required maybe look at improving it. Anything is better than what they are planning to do to this beautiful land mark.
