Save the Regent

Dont just stop at signing the petition, write the MPs emails, harrass ISPT into respecting the heritage of Brisbane. We cant allow them to run a ball through one of our few pieces of heritage left.

Compulsory acquisition may be the only way to save this iconic theatre. The government should step in and take back the Regent for the people of Queensland as it is a building of State Interest. Either that, or make a deal with the developer-owners ISPT to have land in the CBD swapped for them to build their tower elsewhere, while the Regent remains intact as a cinema complex until such time as a live multipurpose theatre can be built. A feasibility study is needed now!

I was bought up in Western QLD. A trip to Brisbane always included seeing movie. The Regent was the most magnificent edifice I had ever seen and I recall the sights and smells of the theatre with great fondness. It was also a meeting place. My parents would arrange to meet in the foyer of the Regent at a prearranged time. Perhaps now is the time to share stories and experiences so they at least are not lost forever.

We already have too little Architecture of note in Australia. So many buildings of distinctive value have been destroyed already. It is becoming a very bland "canvas".
Is not Tourism one of Queensland's major industries? What do they expect tourists to do after they have seen the beach?
There is a real lack of value for cultural activities.
Destroying this wonderful Regent Theatre will put a black hole into all of these important issues.
