Queensland MP Aidan Mclindon talks about the Regent:

Comments

Supportive

I support the redevelopment of the Regent. From what I can see, the new development seems sensitive to its past use, and incorporates significant parts of the current structure. The Regent looks outdated and whenever I walk past noone seems to be using it. Maybe the new development will make it more commercially viable?

you sound like an employee

... or someone who has something to gain from this development. The point of the Regent is that IT IS OUTDATED!
Its a place of historical significance and cultural heritage!

Thats what WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE : The Regent!

The new development is about as sensitive to the past as the Deen brothers were to the Cloudland Ballroom!

The reason nobody's using it

The reason nobody's using it is that it's now closed and, because the tenantsknew the site had no future, they failed to market it before its closure. Whether an office tower will be commercially viable is debatable -- Brisbane currently has a huge oversupply of office space, and even the state government and council are decentralising -- but, in any case, it won't be a theatre, and that's its historical context.

i can distinctly recall...

Being told by the Regent staff to go see my film at the myer centre because they just couldnt be bothered projecting it at the Regent. There was no toilet paper in the loos. The projection was always out of focus. Birch Carrol Coyle either deliberately drove the regent into the ground or they simply didnt care. One way or another, the place always ran at a profit until its sale to ISPT in 2007. Interesting fact that!

wow!

Awesome to see a REAL member of parliament supporting the regent. I wonder if he has the guts to raise the issue in parliament and demand answers?

blinders

How much longer will the labor and liberal party try to ignoe this issue

Thank you

Thank you Mr McLindon for hearing us and representing us, where no-one else in govt is.
