Stop the demolition

If you feel strongly about the Regent, please email Andrew Fraser - deputypremierandtreasurer@ministerial.qld.gov.au - and call on him to order an immediate stop to the demolition and an inquiry into the refusal of heritage status for the Showcase cinema and its surrounds and subsequent development approval.

You may also want to contact Environment Minister Vicky Darling - derm@ministerial.qld.gov.au - and ask why her deparment gave misleading advice to the Queensland Heritage Council about the status of material in the Showcase cinema, and what she is prepared to do about it.

In the latest Brisbane Times story, here, Cr David Hinchliffe suggests that the new evidence is enough to force such a move.

Dear brett & others

Thanks for sticking your neck out.

Your perserverance on this issue has not gone un noticed. I am certain there are plenty of other grateful lurkers out there who have never before commented here. You have done a terrific thing and it took bravery.

Im sad we lost this precious building but proud of you for standing up for it. Thanks so much.

Thanks Brett

I would like to add my voice to the thankyous for all those people who did their best against a greedy, misdirected mob of vandals.
Especially thankyou to Brett for being a high profile voice in the media.

Its all very well to jump up and down with your demands...

But what is save the regent doing to stop the demolition. Aside from complaining no end, what practical steps did save the regent do to achieve a better outcome?

Its great you attempted to stop the demolition. But complaining and making demands is simply not enough.

Tremendous effort

The Save The Regent group (and the other similar groups) put up a mighty fight, a valiant effort in these times of complete apathy. They dedicated their time, their passion and dedication to a project that bore no benefit to them personally or financially.

They are to be commended, not derided.

Can I ask, what did YOU do to to save the last picture palace in Brisbane?

Its all good and well to jump onto the internet and make such pointed statements, especially when you can do it behind the veil of anonymity.

HERE HERE

THANK YOU TO STR, RTHS AND RTR FOR TRYING. ITS ALWAYS WORTH THE EFFORT. WINNING ISNT EVERYTHING. SOMETIMES THE GOOD GUYS DONT WIN.

Agreed, I applaud the Save

Agreed, I applaud the Save The Regent group (& associated groups) for their efforts, against some pretty tall odds.

The development-at-all-costs brigade will latch on to whatever shiny tower is mooted, whatever refurbed shopping mall is planned, believing that somehow this will make their city more vibrant, but in truth it is the unique places that add to a city's overall worth (fairly ordinary towers & malls lose their lustre).

It is all too easy to place the end of the Brisbane Regent somewhere in the late 1970s, but really it is about saving what heritage that you can in your lifetime, a time when you could have done something. Looking at the results of a flawed heritage assessment & what looks to be the less than careful removal of heritage items from the building, it seems that genuine history was swept away in more recent times.

Here in Sydney, we came perilously close to erasing our theatre heritage, but thankfully attitiudes changed and amazing buildings like the Capitol Theatre (fully restored & extended) & The State (plans are afoot for major improvements) were saved, providing entertainment, employment, and also adding to the state's economy. The 'white-shoe brigade' seem happy to see the end of the last major heritage theatre left in Brisbane's CBD, sad.

can spend newman has been very very quiet about the regent

can spend newman has been very very quiet about the regent

CANT DO NEWMAN

CANT KEEP A PROMISE. E.G: THE ONE WHERE HE SAID HE WOULD SAVE THE REGENT.

LIAR & DEVELOPER SYMPATHISER. THATS HIS TRUE COLOURS.

a bit late i thinks

The regent was over 50% demolished by the time this post was published.
Something about horses bolting and being late.

Isnt it a bit late to be trying to stop anything?

And what about rebuild? HIGHLY UNLIKELY. SO WHY ARENT THE TV, PRESS & RADIO JUMPING ON THIS????

they all think the fight is over. SO IS IT?

How can we trust a

How can we trust a government that merely passes the buck back and forth in a cowardly effort to hide their blatant manipulation of and lies to the public they are elected to serve? Who was paid off how much to make sure this development went ahead no matter what?

i can tell you it wasnt just one person

its was a whole bunch of them. and you would never suspect them.

hell to pay

if only our lazy citizens got off their arses and did something about this inept and disgraceful developer loving government.

the government seems to have tried to intervene

they caved in to developer pressure

Take Brookfield Multiplex to court!

The apathy of Brisbane is disgusting. Brisbane is about to lose the the only example of a picture palace ever built in Queensland! The Brisbane City Council and State Government should stop the development now or take Brookfield Multiplex to court.

didnt save the regent go to court already?

sure i read that at brisbanetimes

what about ISPT?

they are the people who comissioned multiplext to destroy this queensland icon

TOO SAD FOR WORDS

GOODBYE REGENT. WHAT A GREAT LIFE YOU PUT ON.
hello vacant lot. what a sh1t future we have together.

Merry Christmas Brisbane

This year, our politicians have so kindly brought us a nice large serve of buck-passing, incompetence and blatant disregard to fill that large hole in the ground that they are ensuring The Regent theatre box becomes... so much for that Heritage Act implemented to prevent a repeat of good ol' Joh's days!

Can-Do Campbell's council approved the Development Application based upon incorrect evidence presented to them by DERM and the QHC; despite the local consensus that this was a site of great cultural significance that should be preserved for entertainment purposes.

Mr Can-Do, where are you now? You are no longer a local Lord Mayor under the thumb of state government bullies - you are leader of the state Opposition, being given a real chance to show some integrity and win our favour prior to the upcoming election... or are you just as mesmerized by the "magic buck" beck and call of dishonest developers as the rest of them?

Bris-bland needs a grand Regent Theatre to help it claim a fair share of the nation's lucrative live entertainment industry... instead our vision-less leaders ask us to settle for an existing cement-box complex on the flood plain and an empty eyesore towering over the site of our last heritage-styled theatre.

a tragic sight

a dirty deed

this is beyond a joke

how absurd. What did the developers do to twist the arms of the government to remove the heritage protections afforded by the first directive?

where is can do newman

he promised, at the last election, that he would save the regent!

He was just spinning his way to re-election

He was just spinning his way to re-election. In retrospect, It was foolish to trust him.

its would appear that no-one is listening....

I wonder why????

Goodbye Labour

It seems more iconic buildings have disappeared under Labour in recent years than under Joh! This development must be halted until we know what we are going to lose and what can still be salvaged.

wont be forgetting

Ill be remembering/ the -------s that took away the only picture palace in QLD
