Last chance to see?

The Brisbane International Film Festival opens tonight (July 31), possibly for the last time at the Regent. if you're in the crowd and you see a government minister or other decison makers ... well, it might be worth letting your thoughts about the future of this beautiful, historic venue be known.

Farewell to the Victory

Brisbane faces another heritage challenge following the fire that gutted the Victory Hotel on the corner of Charlotte and Edward Sts. Will the building be salvaged and rebuilt - or will it be razed and the hotel, and adjoining beer garden, be replaced with another tower?

Live and kicking

Musical theatre is thriving, according to this story in The Australian. Of course, most of the the action - and the money from the box office - is in Melbourne, where there are enough venues to stage several shows at once and the government is an enthusiastic supporter of the popular performing arts. Couldn't Queensland do with some of the action, Premier Bligh? Perhaps a restored Regent might just be the answer.
